Our history

The community:

El Husillo is one of the poorest neighborhoods in Havana. It is located in the middle of the forest and is mostly made up of immigrants from rural areas of Eastern Cuba. As such, it is particularly vulnerable to social and economic issues, and is often isolated from the infrastructures in place to deal with these issues.

There are some 5,000 people currently living there, though it is quickly expanding.

Education:

Through workshops, counseling and cultural activities, La Casita del Husillo provides tools for the children and teenagers of the community to handle some of the issues they endure.

We work with the community to prevent different forms of violence, including sexual abuse, harassmant, discrimination and builing.

We provide a support network for victims of violence, including counseling from outside experts and community interventions.

We focus on sexual education, since the neighborhood has a high rate of teenage pregnancy.

We support members of the community to pursue their education or find employment.
